CWS Puts Fortune 500 Client on Fast Track to Zero Waste

Zero Waste is Possible: With The Right Plan

Zero Waste may seem like a formidable goal for businesses looking to adopt a more sustainable waste management program. However, with dedication and proper guidance, it’s entirely feasible. Corporate Waste Solutions (CWS) developed a Zero Waste Plan for one of the world’s most successful Fortune 500 companies. The global corporation’s headquarters is now firmly on the path to achieving Zero Waste by the year 2025.

In the past, many companies have been deterred from pursuing what appears to be the daunting task of attaining Zero Waste. In recent years, however, there has been an increased focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and on addressing our planet’s growing environmental challenges. As a result, an increasing number of corporations are willing to embrace the Zero Waste challenge.

In 2021, CWS conducted an initial waste audit for the client to identify the diverse waste streams generated on its campus. The primary objectives were to uncover opportunities for waste reduction, minimize their waste to landfill output, and establish a baseline to build toward future progress.

The data indicated that a striking 20% of the headquarter’s waste could not be diverted from landfills. The conclusion was that the campus needed to first, focus on reducing landfill waste generated and second, increase the capture rate of divertible waste generated. The findings of this audit report laid a solid foundation for CWS to develop the company’s Zero Waste Plan.

The campus immediately began to enact the recommendations. One year later, the post-audit report indicated significant progress, as they managed to improve in nearly every category. The results showed that over 70% of the facility’s waste had been diverted from landfills which indicated a better capture rate of divertable waste. Additionally, they were able to reduce their generation of non-divertable waste destined for the landfill from 20% to 14%.

CWS was able to guide the campus to these accomplishments by presenting strategies that successfully reduced the consumption of single-use disposable items, established more efficient waste disposal stations, and enhanced waste management education among their workforce.

With consistent implementation of the plan, the campus should achieve the significant milestone of Zero Waste within the next two years.

This client’s story serves as an inspiring illustration of corporate commitment to Zero Waste through an effective plan of action. Contact CWS to launch your business toward more sustainable practices today.
